Borrowing Policies

Material (Adult) - Loan Period
New Fiction - regular type (the first 6 months of circulation) - 14 days
Fiction (after first 6 months of circulation), New Fiction Large Type,
Old and New Non-Fiction, Audio Books (CD and tape)
- 21 days
Adult and Family Center DVD's and VHS - 2 days
Music CD's - 7 days
Travel, Exercise, Documentary, How To, Arts and Health Videos - 7 days
Magazines* - 7 days

Material (Children) - Loan Period
Summer reading Books and Holyday Books - 14 days
All other Children's Books - 21 days
Children's DVD's, VHS, Music CD's and Magazines* - 7 days

* new magazines are non-circulating in their first month

Item Limits
There is 25 total item limits for all accounts.
Individual item limits are as follows:

  • Books - limit of 3 on any given subject
  • Audio Books - limit of 5
  • Adult/Family Center DVD's and VHS - limit of 3
  • Children's DVD's and VHS - limit of 3
  • Music CD's - limit of 5
  • Magazines - limit of 5

    Renewals
    Library materials may be renewed once on a borrower's card provided that:

  • There are no holds or prior requests for the item in question
  • The item in question is not more than 3 weeks overdue
  • Fines on the patrons account do not exceed $10.00
  • The lending library for interloans allows it

    Returns/Overdues
    Library Materials may be returned at the circulation desk at the Island trees Public Library, at any library within the Nassau Library System or in the book drop.
    Fines for overdues will be charged as follows:

  • DVD's and VHS tapes - $2.00 per day, maximum $25.00 per item
  • All other materials - $0.10 per day, maximum $2.00 per item

    Ovedue Fines will not be charged for days the library is closed.
    Should fines exceed $10.00 there may be block on the account.

    Lost or Damaged Items

    When an item has been ovedue for 1 month the patron is notified that the item has been declared lost.
    Borrowers are responsible for any lost or damaged items on their account. The Island Trees Public Library offers the choice of replacing the actual lost or damaged item or paying the replacement cost to the library.
    For damaged or lost artwork/liner note inserts for DVD's, Videos, Music CD's the entire item must be replaced.
    Should a patron find and want to return an item after having paid for it, they may request a refund by submitting a Refund Request form with a receipt and the item. Forms may be obtained at the circulation desk.

    Interloan Policy
    As a service to community members, patrons can place a reserve for an item that:
    1. the library owns but is currently circulating or
    2. the library does not own but my be available from another library.
    These requests can be made online or at the library.
    Phone requests are limited to four (4) per day..
    Delinquent patrons forfeit the privilege of reserving books, or checking reserved items out, until the account are cleared.
    Patrons will be notified when a requested item becomes available for pickup.
    The library will hold the item requested for pickup for a total of seven (7) days before sending it back to the owning library.
    Materials owned by other libraries can be renewed as long as there are no holds on the material.

    Program Policy
    Unless stated otherwise, the following rules apply for all library programs:

  • Registrations is required for every program
  • Programs are initially open to Island Trees residents only
  • Non-residents are welcome to sign up one week prior to the start of a program if room allows
  • Unless cancellation is made by presenter or the library, there are no refunds
